Rest by the water

Born in the North of Ireland, Stuart studied, lived and taught in Cumbria and Skye for 23 years before returning to Derry where his studio is now based. His connection with the landscape is indivisible. He is fascinated with the momentary conditions of light, colour and perceptions of form; how we respond to these experiences and what significances we have as transient witnesses.

Painting for him is an interpretation of what we see and how we see it, an echo of experience. In any given artwork, influences both empirical or from past memory form new responses. Rather than a notion of space, Stuart prefers to think of painting and drawing as an entity of time. It is a document of our presence and an artist's creative process.

It is a real pleasure for Stuart to return to his beloved Cumbria for this exhibition.
